Acid Indigestion
Excess acid, acid indigestion, hyperacidity, GERD (Gastro Esophogeal Reflux Disorder), hiatal hernia, are
all names given to the same condition in various stages. A hiatal hernia is an excess acid problem serious enough to
require medical intervention of some sort, which in Western medicine all too often means an operation.
There are many different classifications that can be laid upon food. We can group it into high protein or
low protein foods, high fat and low fat foods, high fiber and low fiber foods, foods rich or poor in certain nutrients,
and many other classifications. One group that relates specifically to the problem of excess acid is
the food/drink group of acid-forming and alkaline-forming foods.
Acid-Forming Foods
Acid-forming foods are those that people who suffer from excess acid have a preference for. It includes
all wheat products such as bread of all kinds, crackers, pastries, etc. In fact all grains except corn and millet are
acid-forming.
Alkaline-Forming Foods
Alkaline-forming foods are made up of most of the fruits and vegetables. They should comprise about
50-70% of our diet. Nowadays however, that proportion has been reversed, with the acid-forming foods making up about
50-70% of the diet of many people. This is why there is an epidemic of hyperacidity in many parts of the world.
The Dangers of Long-Term HyperAcidity
Long-term hyperacidity can lead to many health complications, among them:
osteoporosis, heel spurs, gastrointestinal disturbances, GERD, kidney stones, and a number of other conditions.
